What are we Happy About: fun at board meeting, great presentation, thankful for what Salvation Army does, last Thursday trip to Leaf's game aborted as roads were very bad, whiteout blizzard conditions, day by day and enjoying each one, got out early, a beautiful day, avoided flood in basement, our guests, theatre season soon, summer hair cut, going to Florida.

Rotary Minute:

Millions of people all over the world are currently displaced by armed conflict or persecution. In fact, 90% of casualties in armed conflicts are civilians, half of which are children. Through service projects and Rotary programs, the Rotary family is committed to pursuing projects that address the structural causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources....
Rotarians train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict, and aid refugees who have fled dangerous areas. During February, Rotary Peace Building and Conflict Prevention Month, we’re celebrating our commitment to build peace and mitigate conflict.
February 23, Rotary's 119th Birthday is also World Understand and Peace Day
PEACEBUILDING AND CONFLICT PREVENTION
Today, over 70 million people are displaced as a result of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations. Half of them are children.
We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.

Story
Salvation Army in Brighton 2024
Danny and Lisa were introduced:

Major Dan Broome was born and raised in Ontario, his younger years were spent in Toronto,  high school years were spent in Belleville Ontario. He started attending the Salvation Army when he was 18 years old which led to his calling to become a Salvation Army officer,   Before becoming a  Salvation Army officer.  Dan obtained a  degree in Biblical and Theological studies at the Salvation Army Booth College in Winnipeg and worked full time as a camp cook prior to entering the Salvation Army Training College in Toronto in 1988. He was commissioned and Ordained as a Salvation Army Officer in June 1990.

In 2020 he celebrated 30 years as an Officer. He has served in Salvation Army Churches in Paris, Brampton, Milton, Oakville, St. George's Bermuda, Moose Jaw Saskatchewan and currently in Cobourg. He also served for 9 years as a Correctional Services Chaplain at the Maplehurst Correctional Centre, and the Brampton Courthouse for 9 years.  His wife Wendy and Dan have been married for 33 years,  have no children, but  do have a dog,  Charlie who is 7 years old.  He is an avid reader and tries to walk or run at least once day.

Dan brought with him,  the manager of the  Port  Hope office,  Lisa Graham.  Lisais a member of the Port Hope Rotary club and she will be the one who will be giving oversight to our Brighton satellite office once we are able to get it established.

Lisa has been a part of the Salvation Army her whole life. She grew up   with the Salvation Army as her church and she has been the youth pastor at  the Cobourg Salvation Army for 25 years. Lisa has had various positions within the Salvation Army and in various  cities. Currently, she has been the Manager of the Community & Family services office in Port Hope for 9 years and are hoping to open a  satellite office here in Brighton which she will manage.
Before working for the Salvation Army in Port Hope, she  was the morning  show co-host on the UCB Canada radio station 90.7FM in Cobourg. She is also a fellow Rotarian from the Port Hope Rotary club. Lisa has  been married going on 26 years and they have four adult children, 3 girls and  1 boy, 2 dogs and 3 bunny rabbits.
She loves to read, and she  plays in our church band and sing in the worship  team, and loves to  go camping with her family.

Danny opened with a thanks to Rotary and the community for the support last Christmas season. We raised about $17,000 through the Kettle campaign in 2023. Significantly up from about $11,000 in 2022. However, 2022 was impacted by the big snow storm just before Christmas day.

They raised $147,000 in 2023 in Brighton, Cobourg and Port Hope through 10 kettles.

They can't do what they do without the support of the communities.

There goal is to give back to the Communities, particularly by helping people stay in their homes.

They have been looking for a space in Brighton to hold a one day a week drop in centre. This can expand but plan is to start one day a week. They haven't been able to find a location that is reasonable yet.

Since September to December, they put $28,515 back into the Brighton Community. They have helped 46 clients, primarily through helping with rent, utilities, food (what Food Bank doesn't cover), and dental. They have a program to provide baby formula to families for first year after birth. They helped 22 families in Brighton and 66 is the broader community including Colborne and Campbellford.

They also help with vision and prescriptions. They have a Coat for Kids and Adult program in other areas. They don't want to duplicate services already offered.

They partner with United Way to provide a back pack program for kids.

They get individuals who apply directly to them, but also referrals.

At the drop in centre they hope to establish in Brighton, it will a cafe, relaxed style. To help people physically, emotionally and spiritually.

R Daniel thanks Lisa and Dan.
