Children’s village for Applefest. It takes place on September 23rd 2023. Our children’s village is free for all event that includes 3 bouncy houses (1 toddler, 2 for ages 4 and up), a rock climbing wall, 3 interactive games such as whack a mole, 3-1 sports center that includes axe throwing (blow-up), basketball,  football and soccer, rock climbing wall and touch a truck event. All of which are free to anyone who walks into our village. We believe every child

Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup - Rotary Day of Service!

Saturday, April 22nd (Earth Day), our 3rd Annual 'Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup' Event and A District wide Rotary Day of Service.  We will be joined by 100's of other Clubs from additional Districts surrounding the Great Lakes.  This is our day to show 'Rotary in Action' on a massive scale, and promote 'Environmental Sustainability' within our communities.  Pull out your T-Shirt from last year, and sign-up.  In addition, please invite family, friends and neighbours to participate with us.  What a great opportunity for us to promote our 'Rotary Day of Service', where the goal is to involve 25% non-Rotarians.  We started an 'important' tradition two years ago, which is exciting to continue and build upon. For More information please contact - Dan Coombes - Chair GLWC (dancoombes4@gmail.com)

Rotary District 7070 Assembly
To be held at Centennial College 8th floor
937 Progress Avenue Toronto
In view of the annual turnover of Rotary leadership each year, special effort is required to provide club leaders with appropriate instruction for the tasks they will assume. The annual district assembly is the major leadership training event in each Rotary district of the world. The workshops offer motivation, inspiration, Rotary information and new ideas for club officers, directors and key committee chairmen of each club. Some of the most experienced district leaders conduct informative discussions on all phases of Rotary administration and service projects. The sessions give all participants valuable new ideas to make their club more effective and interesting.
Normally 5 to 7 delegates from each club (officers, directors, committee chairs, and all interested Rotarians both experienced and new to Rotary, etc.) are invited to attend the training session.
It is mandatory for President Elects to take part in the assembly, they will need to approve the 2023-2024 District Budget. This year the Assembly Fee is $50 per person it includes all meals and parking.

 Final thought:
What did the DNA say to the other DNA?
"Do these genes make me look fat?"

Smile: blush

R Steve S shared:

A group of Edmonton friends were huge party people, they drank too much, smoked and when they died, they all ended up in Hell. But they loved, it. It was hot, so they played like they were at a paradise resort. The Devil didn't like this, so he cranked up the heat. They continued to enjoy it and party, cooking steaks and having a good time. So the Devil flipped the switch the other way and made it very cold. When the Devil checked on them again, they were still partying because Hell had frozen over and that meant the Oilers had won the cup..

Rotary Minute:

Rotarians in District 7070 have been committed over the past nearly 40 years to raising funds to immunize children worldwide and our efforts are paying off.  You should be proud of the difference that Rotary has made in the lives of millions of children by eliminating this dreadful disease.
I want to thank you for your past efforts and ask that you recommit to helping us raise funds to finish Rotary’s number one initiative of eradicating polio.  Rotary is still committed to raising $50 million a year for this effort.

As such, we are launching the District 7070 Polio Plus Society and are inviting you to join our efforts to continue to raise funds to eradicate polio.  To become a member of the District 7070 Polio Plus Society you are asked to commit to making an annual donation of $100 USD or more to The Rotary Foundation’s Polio Plus Fund until the last two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, are certified free of the wild polio virus.
Stories
2023 Relay for Life
R Joyce introduced Karen White:

Karen has been a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society for almost 20 years. She has held a variety of positions on Relay For Life committees over the years. She is currently the volunteer director for this year's event as well as doing Corporate Engagement. When the Belleville office was in operation, she held the position of Volunteer President. She also coordinated the sale of Daffodil pins for the area. She also works with the Canadian Cancer Society as an advocacy volunteer. They work with all levels of  government to ensure Canadians live in a healthy environment and have the cancer-related care they need.

Karen thanked the Rotary Club of Brighton for our support. This year the Bay of Quinte Relay for Life combines several previous events including Brighton. She remembers the Brighton events fondly due to the community spirit and from the heart.

During COVID they went virtual like so much of what we did. In 2022 they were live at Loyalist College. Their goal in 2022 was $30,000 and they raised almost $40,000. This year the walk will be at Trenton High School and their goal is $56,000.

Karen's team goal was $2,500 which she has already reached and exceeded. Particularly with help from Rotary, including Brighton, Stirling and Trenton clubs.

She ahared her love of a Harley, but because she kept falling off, she now has a spider (R Joyce suggested she now rides a tricycle). Karen hasn't fallen off yet.

Karen described the luminary sponsorship that Rotary sponsors and how this is the most emotional part of the event. No dry eyes. Last year they sold out and scrambled to create more to meet demand. Move and be moved. The luminaries start about 9:30pm and walking about 10pm.

Survivors are now referred to as participants of hope. There will be a special lounge for them. Rotarian John Brewster from Stirling club will be speaker.

This year event is June 10th from 2pm to 11pm. Longer than recommended by the Cancer Society but desired by participants.

It is all about HOPE. $2.5million raised for Research. There are about 215 research specialist in Ontario.  All about prevention and treatment.

Karen lost her husband and brother to cancer.

They have almost $6,000 raised from Corporate donors to-date, and 11 teams registered so far.

Wheels of Hope, they now have a van to help people get to treatment. They also support people with wigs and other devises.

She is thankful for a wonderful committee that she works with.
