Guests: Dennis Fletcher (Fletch) from Brighton Digital Archives

Presentation:

President Daniel presented R Steve with Paul Harris Fellow pin +4 and gave a brief explanation of the pin. Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary. To honour those in our community who do good works, we present them with a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF). Or for every $1,000 US donate to the Foundation, you earn a PHF, and multiples for every additional $1,000 donation to the Foundation.

Correspondence:

1. Request for support from the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee for 2020 float theme 'Hope Connects the World'.

Smile: blush

R Craig shared story of having a beer with his cousin and a sod truck goes rumbling by. His cousin said he was going to do that when he won lottery. Do what he was asked? Take his grass away to be cut.

Three days later his cousin won the Newfoundland lottery. $1 per year for million years.

Announcements:.

  • Update from Isaac in India and the Cornerstone Orphanage DKSHA. Money from Brighton Rotary helped buy and install 2 new water tanks (2000 litre) to replace old tanks damaged by Cyclone Gaja in 2018.
  • Fletch presented everyone with a 2020 Calendar Brighton Then and Now. If you missed today, he left extras. For this calendar, they show historical pictures of Brighton, and then a recent picture of the same building from the same angle. Fletch provided a bit of context and history for some of his favourite pictures in the calendar.
  • Fletch gave brief history of the Brighton Digital Archives. Formed 5 years ago when a small group got together at Hilton Hall to brain storm how to raise money for Hilton Hall. Scanning old photos was discussed, but it went further and became Digital Archives. They wanted to do it 'right', and not leave an improper or unorganized mess for others in future, so they spent 6 months studying and researching how to properly create an archive. They learned standards which they now use for what they do. They have about 10,000 digital photos and documents and have been doing a lot of videos. They have about 25 now and 5 to be edited. They are working to create a video log of Brighton's history from the view of various residents before the history is lost. This includes about 60 minutes of historian Dan Buchanan telling of Brighton's history.
