R Craig's uncle is an avid cowboy. However, Newfoundland is rocky and doesn't make for pleasant horse rides. So one year he took his horse to the US midwest where he enjoyed a ride over the grass lands. On this long and dusty trip he came across a saloon and thought this was great. So he hitched his horse to the hitching post and walked inside. No one there paid him any attention, but he went to the bar and ordered a beer. When he had relaxed he went out to continue his journey but found his horse gone. He went back inside and asked, 'who stole his horse?'. He got no response so he took out his 6 shooter and fired couple shots into the air and said that if his horse was not returned by the time he had another beer, he would do what he did the last time in Newfoundland. After his beer he went out and his horse had been returned. As he was about to leave, the bar tender came out and asked what he did last time in Newfoundland? He said he walked home.

Daniella's Report:
Daniella reported that she enjoyed the District Conference but would have enjoyed more free time outside to explore the area.
She said she wondered why so many stories were sad, such as Amanda Lindhout's kidnapping in Somolia and Erin Davis's loss of her daughter, but appreciated these women's struggles to deal with their tragedies and deal with them.
She always appreciates opportunity to get together with the other exchange students.
Daniella asked and R Rudy and Liesje volunteered to take her to Cobourg Saturday afternoon for birthday party of the student from Norway.

Daniella also provided some history of the Faro Island Flag. The flag has cross representing Christian nation. White background represents water spray on the rocks and purity. The red and blue cross is a connection with other European Scandinavian countries. The flag was new in April 25, 1940 at beginning of WWII. Denmark was over run by  Germany and Britain took the Faro Islands. To protect shipping from both sides they created their own separate flag.

The Danger of the Single Story

Young women shared several examples of how a single story can impact our lives.

As a young girl growing up in Nigeria to middle class parents she was an avid reader. However, all her books were from America and Britian about white people. None represented her, her family or Africans.

Her family were able to hire local help and there was a house boy who was from a 'poor' family. When she visited the 'poor' boys family they had a beautiful weaved basket created by the house boy's brother. This did not fit with her story that they were 'poor'. She learned they were poor but also hard working.

At age 19 she went to University in the US and found that her roommate had a very backward view of African's. Her roommate was surprised she could read, had such good English and was educated.

After several years in America she visited Mexico and her initial single story of Mexican's was related to them as immigrants and crooks.  She found a different story.

She went on to talk about Power, and that those with Power are often the ones telling the Stories that we consume.

However, we need a balance in the stories we learn, we need a wider experience. Stories matter.
