Kristina Nairn was introduced by R Jeff; Kristina is a nurse with the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit working out of the Port Hope office. She works with students at  the County High Schools. Kristina returned to the area about 6 years ago to work with the Health Unit in this new position.
Kristina explained that she has an unusual role. She works to understand the relationship between economics and its impact on the health of individuals and families. Each Health Unit has 2 nurses working in this role. It is part of the 20,000 home program.
She advised that homelessness exists in Northumberland County, even if we don't see it.
A few years ago, she discovered that high school kids are good at fundraising but don't always appreciate why they are raising money. So in 2013 they organized the first high school forum where all 6 high schools in the County were represented. The question, Why do we have food banks? was asked and explored. Goal was to raise awareness, to learn why. The students came up with STOP, Students Opposed to Poverty. So annually, they organize a one day seminar at a High School in the County, a different school each year. This year it is ENSS's turn. They look for 10 representatives from each school plus staff and coordinators, about 80 people total.
Kristina is looking for community support and engagement. Last year in Campbellford, the Rotary Club and Lioness Club helped by providing lunch for everyone. This year, the culinary program at ENSS is hoped will prepare meals, but she is asking Rotary to help financially to pay for meals. Also, she is looking for volunteers to be part of simulation, looking at education, transportation and job issues. All about engaging the youth.
October 17 is Eradication of Poverty Day. The seminar at ENSS is scheduled for Tuesday October 16.
